Authorities: Fugitive Sex Offender Arrested In Carteret County

Authorities say a fugitive sex offender, living under an alias for the past seventeen years, has been arrested in Newport.

The Highway Patrol and Carteret County Sheriff's Office arrested 45-year-old Mark Colvin of 805 Chatham Street. Authorities say he has been living under the alias of Eric Franklin Birchfield.

Troopers say Colvin attempted to avoid a drivers license checking station when he was arrested.

Sheriff's detectives fingerprinted Colvin and learned his real identity and that he is listed as an absconder from probation and a registered
sex offender from Florida.

Florida officials say Colvin was convicted of sexual molestation of a 14 year old child and fled the state seventeen years ago.

I don't think you can really compare the prevalence of robbery vs. rape, sexual assault, etc. based on conviction rates or arrests, there's too many variables. From a victim's standpoint robbery is more of a right/wrong issue, if someone robbed you, you were wronged, its not your fault. But sexual crimes, you have children who don't realize until years later that they were abused, you have those who feel like it was their fault, people who tell someone but aren't believed, people who feel like they don't have anyone to tell, etc. Victims feel ashamed or are threatened to not say anything. What is sad, is that the men who sexually take advantage of women and children are manipulative and know how to control how their victims. They are sick people who prey on the weak. Robbery is definitely wrong, but good people can justify it when times are hard, but how do you justify a sexual assault? If they are capable of that, then you are dealing with a very sick individual.

Oh Grochy one you know for sure he has lived for 17 years without incident!! Explain trying to avoid a traffic check if he is innocent of NO crime!! he should be shot. Your excuses for his actions are why this country is going to hell in a hand basket so fast!! he ruined a 14 year old life with his crime. he deserves no quarter! These people cannot be cured except with a death sentence. I guess you will be paying his bond, and helping with legal fees since he is such an upstanding citizen. while he is out will you let him live with you?

If this guy was black the comments would be different. And to the other person who commented to tasha white men do it all the time. Back in the day it was okay to date a man older than you. Thomas Jefferson did it. He was white.

well I guess I'am diffrent, I'am a black female that would not accept it, if some one did this to my child I would make sure they go to jail, my whole point was that men in general need to get there mind on something other than sex and stealing, and I to worked at the hospital and did home health work, I would have to disagree with you on that one,.

The fact that the guy tried to avoid the traffic check is probably the only reason he got caught. The 14 year old may have told him she was 20 for all we know. He's lived there for 17 years without incident? That tells me he may be a victim of the justice system that puts the lable "sex offender" on a guy who may not be guilty of anything serious. Think about it. "Sex offender" and "Pedophile" are not completely synomomous. And Tasha, I agree with your observation that certain crimes seem to be exclusive to the races. However, in the 1960's I knew of a white teen-age girl who got mixed up with an older black guy but I also feel like she did it to shock her parents. And we know that various teachers and public officials have been accused of "sex crimes" that have proven false. What if this guy just didn't have a good enough lawyer to get him off? I don't know this guy but I'm a little less hasty to judge him as an ogre without a lot more facts than the paper put out there.

Black men do it all the time. It is just more culturally accepted amongst blacks. So no one is arrested. Note the rate of pregnancies amongst 12-15 year old black girls (daddies 19-35 (Automatic Statutory Rape). I work at a hospital and have seen it everyday for years. It is pandemic.
