Woman Faces Felony Abuse Charges

A Bertie County woman charged with neglecting an elderly woman is due in court Wednesday.

Court records in Bertie County show Kim Beacham, 51, of Winsor, is charged with one count of felony abuse of a disabled or elderly person, inflicting serious injury.

Beacham was arrested after staff at Bertie Memorial Hospital called the sheriff's office about the 71-year-old woman suffering from neglect, according to the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald. The paper says doctors think the woman was neglected for about a month.

This is sad!!!!!!!!!!!!Everyone that lived in that house knew, what was going on.How hard is it to take care of a lady, this happen within a MONTH,NO FAMILY,checking on her, wheres the grand daughter and other family members, the inlaws, where were they at,if so called Kim,was SICK!!!!!!!!!!It takes 2 mins to stop by to check on her,the mother was charged for abuse, the police arrested her,NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!!!!!!!!I have known April for about 9yrs.I heard about her wreck, that was TROUBLE,it is very clear HE IS USING HER FOR HER MONEY,if nt,why nt get a house a month ago, before she got her money.Ken waited for her money, thats trouble. The mother will get hers.I pray April will WAKE UP,and STOP letting people take her for her kindness. Just answer one question KEN,why get a house NOW,why didnt KEN get one WAY before POOR April got her money. SHAME ON YOU KEN,and I hope they put your mother under the jail for neglecting her elderly mom. CHARGE HER!!!!!!!!! One last thing,it sounds like the whole family is CRAZY,I just thank GOD they got her out.Now lets see,if she gets whats coming to her.

after reading the comments I think number one, if her family new she was not capable of taking care of her mother why didn't someone step up and help. Second, I think if your going to post an abuse charge on one you should everyone else! Why run her down for obviously something that won't intentional but yet the ones who beat their spouse til a blooy pulp you don't see their mug shot and there info listed! come on people!

This was her mom she was taking care of. They practically made her take her out of nursing home to take care of her. She was not getting paid and no company hired her. Get your facts straight before you criticize someone. She did not have much of a choice but to take her mom in. She did the best she could but it is hard to handle a large person when you are not capable of lifting her to give her proper baths and things of that nature. They all need prayers more than critisims at this point. Thanks

This is very sad that everyone is judging this girl-all of the facts aren't listed. yes, she's bipolar, but she has other issues. She doesn't even realize she has these issues. She's not lazy, nor is she on drugs. This reminds me of Nancy Grace & everyone else on the news who condems without knowing the facts. God knows the truth & this girl did the best she could -before you speak, you need to meet this girl-the words neglect & abuse sound harsh & I'm ashamed to say if I didn't know Kim, I would be thinking the same thing. She was pretty much forced to care for this lady & she didn't have the capability to do it, but she DID NOT physically harm this lady regardless of what the news says. We sure are quick to condem someone when we don't know the facts, aren't we? You have no idea how she's always thinking of others with phone calls, cards, etc. This was an unfortunate situation, but the lady is okay. Kim wasn't taking her usual medicine, so she lost track of time. Are there any other Christian people out there who will give Kim a chance & try to understand that this was not an intentional act & I pray to God if some of you ever get caught up in something that is not exactly as it seems, someone will take your side. She thought she was doing a good thing- there was NO purposeful abuse- there are always 2 sides to the story....

I'm also "diagnosed" bi-polar, but with that being said, i don't get it, i agree w/anom @4:57pm. I see it as a case of Lazy-itis for most of them, to use this as an excuse. WHY, if in fact, she was as bad as people are saying up here, did she have a job to begin with?? I am wondering, WHO? Hired her, IF, she is THAT BAD?? Please,! Blow the Whistle on the company, because, i too, have in-home health aids that come to me(when they can make it to work) on a daily basis. SO, i would have to agree, (with what all i have had to deal with lately with the majority of the aids being sent to me), it's more the LAZY-ITIS syndrome..or so I see it. I am Physically challenged, not mentally, believe it or not, Bi-Polar was originally known as Manic Depression. They later changed it to the term Bi-Polar. I guess, that somehow makes it sound worse or something..i say, these home health companies really NEED to Start Drug-Testing,and really doing the BACKGROUND Check that THEY SAY they ARE doing!! I personally, have had some that have come to me on their very first day only to tell me that they have/had a drug problem, but yet when you call the company they make out like they had no idea?? WAKE UP PEOPLE.. this is WRONG.. IF, in fact this woman was SO BAD that she couldn't take care of herself, then she DEFINITELY HAD NO BUSINESS WORKING with the Elderly/Disabled!! PERIOD!!!

Kim was not hired by some health care agency. You don't need to make all of these inaccurate assumptions. It appears to me that you have the Lazy-Itis syndrome yourself since you are able to be on the computer all day - oh my - you could be employed somewhere using a computer instead of getting the government help, of which I am sure I am paying for. If you truly do have Bipolar you should have some compassion for another human diagnosed with Bipolar. My understanding is some people use the term to get disability. At least Kim is not using the system and she definitly could. I am sure your aids no longer want to come back and help you since everything you have stated about health care workers is negative and degrading. Go to work, take care of yourself, quit sucking off the government and stay out of other folk's business that don't apply to you. And....have a nice day.

I have known Kim all my life. She is barely able to care for herself. I can't believe anyone would expect her to be a caregiver. She has a mental illness and would never intentionally neglect anyone. Other family members need to look at themselves for expecting her to care for someone else. They might be just as much at fault.

I've known Kim since her birth. She would never purposefully hurt anyone. But Kim suffers from severe BiPolar and other issues, causing her to lose track of time and place. Kim needs someone to take care of HER, and shouldn't be expected to take responsibility for anyone else. Kim, I love you, girl.

If that's the case, you should've informed Bertie County Department of Social Services. They would have intervened.

Please do not judge unless you know the facts. Kim is a very sweet good-hearted person. This was not an intentional act. Innocent until proven guilty - please remember that.

It will be interesting to hear how this "sweet good-hearted person" didn't intentionally neglect the woman in her care.

I agree with JO. I mean, she might be your family member and Im sorry for that, but the poor lady who can probably hardly take care of herself depended on Kim which OBVIOUSLY she couldnt. It will come back to her.
