Windsor Officials: We're Better Prepared For Irene

Local leaders in one town are drawing on recent experience with natural disasters as they prepare for Irene.

The streets of Windsor in Bertie County were under several feet of water last October as Tropical Storm Nicole caused the Cashie River to swell and flood the town.

Officials say the river level is lower today than it was last fall, and they're better prepared for Irene. Joe Alexander is a town commissioner and says, "We've been working on getting this water out of the town faster since the last one. And the town crew has done a fantastic job opening up waterways so it will get on out instead of backing up."

If the river does flood, Alexander says they'll seal off the town at the highway bypasses -- only letting emergency vehicles in and out.

People in low-lying areas are already encouraged to get to higher ground before the storm.
