NEW INFO: Teen Run Over By Car Killed

A Jamesville teenager died after what the Highway Patrol calls a "unique collision" in Martin County.

Troopers say 17-year-old Richard Elbert Hardison of Jamesville died Tuesday, several hours after he was discovered pinned underneath a car in the ditch across the street from his house.

The family tells WITN the car belonged to Hardison's twin brother, who they say found Hardison in the ditch.

Hardison lived on Grey Farm Rd., about two miles outside of Jamesville near Highway 64, according to troopers. He would have been a senior this year at Riverside High School.

According to the Highway Patrol, Hardison appeared to have been pushing a car out of his driveway either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. The keys were in the ignition, but the car was not running; it was in neutral. Troopers believe the car started rolling due to the slight incline on the driveway, and Hardison tried to get in front of the car to stop it from rolling further. Hardison ended up in the ditch across the road from the driveway, pinned in by the car.

The Highway Patrol says 911 got called at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, when it was discovered Hardison was pinned in the ditch. They do not know how long he had been there.

Hardison was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he survived the morning. The Highway Patrol says the teen died around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fatal incident is under investigation.

The teen's wake will be Saturday at New Fellowship Christian Church in Williamston from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Hardison's funeral is 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Riverside High School.
