Thousands of gallons of untreated sewage have spilled into a ditch in the Roanoke River Basin.
Public Works Director Kerry Spivey in the Martin County town of Williamston says 2,500 gallons spilled from a broken sewer main at 512 Warren Street.
The discharge was first discovered at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The crack was bypassed by 1:00, and temporary repairs were completed by 6:00 p.m., according to a release from Spivey. Permanent repairs were finished on Wednesday.
The North Carolina Division of Water Quality was notified and is reviewing the matter.
