Principal Suspended Less Than A Month On The Job

A principal who has been on the job for less than a month is on paid suspension, pending an investigation.

Carson Watford, principal at Bertie High School, was suspended last Wednesday, according to Ella Fields-Bunch who is the human resource officer for the school system.

Watford became principal at the high school in September 28th, and before that was principal at Hertford County Middle School. The school system will not say why the principal has been suspended from his job.

It wasn't that long ago some board members thought it was ok to spend money on their bertie county school credit card for just about anything. Customarily, it was pushed under the rug, and a few hands slapped, but nothing ever done about it. It might be prudent to be careful how bertie tax payer money is being spent. Better yet, publish online your card expenditures so we the taxpayers can see where our money is being spent. Be transparent. Just another long list of bad representation from our school board, and oh by they way, some of us are watching yu.

I say let's hear it for the Superintendent. You say she recruited the principal. I don't know if that is so. But, if that is true and less than a month later she suspends him then I say way to go. She could have swept this under a rug and made it go away like Bertie County Schools has so many times before. I think it says volumes for her that she can call it like it is whether she hired you or not. Way to go Madame Superintendent!

From the 2010-2011 Bertie School Report Card: High suspension rate at Bertie High. 13-20% of teachers at Bertie High and Bertie Middle without licenses. 25% teacher turnover rate at the elementary level and almost 30% teacher turnover rate at the high school level. Half the principals had less than 4 years experience. Less than half (50%) students proficient in reading in grades 3, 4, 7 and 8. Less than 60% proficient in grade 6. Add to this what we know about Bertie like a new superintendent every year or two, central office that for a long time was staffed with friends and relatives many who were not qualified, a bunch of principals practicing retirement on the clock while collecting BIG paychecks and a board member forever stirring up confusion while the district wasted tons of money on God knows what. THESE are the matters we should be crying out about. Quit your whining. Someone finally came along who is trying to stand up for something, clean up a mess and play by real rules and everyone wants to cry foul. Dr. Rollins don't let the foolishness of this blog shake you. There are some people in Bertie who have good sense, open eyes and minds and hearts to do right especially for children. Bottom line, you have more support than this blog indicates. Stay the course. People didn't like it when Jesus cleansed the temple either but it had to be done!

Leave Chip were he is... The Board knew about all the mess that was going on... for them to say they didn't, makes them look like they don't know anything, isn't it funny how every board member push blame to someone else... it would of been nice if they were all on the same page... atleast be consistent!!!

YOU'RE RIGHT!!! The Central Office is still being staffed with friends and relatives. That want change until we get people on the board with morals and values. Most or all new employees now at the Central Office are friends to a certain someone, and remember you still have board member(s) who is looking out for their relative(s) (SHAME). I viewed the report card and although all the schools are struggling in the reading area, I am highly impressed with our children in the Math and Science area (THUMBS UP TO MATH & SCIENCE TEACHERS YOUR DOING AN OURSTANDING JOB). Not everyone is saying that they don’t support Dr. Rollins but she do need to be straight forward because some people know a lie when they hear it. Let’s all work together for the success of our children. Remember it’s not TOGETHER WE CAN it’s TOGETHER WE ARE!!! Go Bertie!!!

Stop talking in riddles. What's the lie you think is being told? You yourself know that it never is really about the superintendent. The BOE pulls the strings in Bertie and every superintendent has to make a choice to either be a puppet or try to out maneuver all the strings. I have found Dr. Rollins to be straight up but when you have to dance around board members (or shall we just say a board member or two because we all know the deal), dance around crazy county politice, dance around crazy "so-called" school district politics (ain't politics really just a bunch of folk always running to a board member of trying to tell on somebody else). That's enough to drive any soul crazy but you want this woman to come in here and, not connected or related to anyone, jump out front and say or do what so that YOU and those like you can shoot her down? Peel back the layers of lies and blindness and look at what she has and is doing - trying to keep a focus on children and leave all the political junk to the junk dealers.

If you don't like what the board of education is doing...run for a seat! If you can do so much better, then go ahead. I do believe that some of the members were voted in a second term. If you didn't like what they did the first term, then why in the heck did they get a second term? Please answer that! Have you ever stopped to think that this man may have done something wrong and that they are taking every action necessary to correct and fix the problem. Stop blaming everyone else around the situation just because you "think" this is a good man, kind man, nice man, etc. This is ridiculous! And as for putting people back at the high school and who else should be put where, get over it! No one cares what you think or who you think would be better at what school. Look at the test scores, and which school made AYP (if you even know what that means). You need to take care of your home life and children before you think about trying to run a school system from behind a computer! How many of you know your child's teacher, or know what homework they have, or have even stepped foot in the school? Get a Life....and a Job!

AYP is Adequate Yearly Progress from the No Child Left Behind Act (so yes I know what it means). I totally agree the passed ADMINISTRATION overspent the budget, but wasn’t it the BOARD that hired them, and yet you throw all the blame to the past administrators and they only do what you (THE BOARD) ALLOW them to do, maybe it’s the board that has no control over anything. (DON’T ACT LIKE YOU DIDN’T KNOW) Don’t used that line of garbage talking about schools making AYP and why, go sell that to the class you teach. You know Calvin Moore should be at BHS; none of what is going on over there now was going on when he was principal, but again personal issues, greed and POLITICS is the reason why he is not over there NOW. He must have done something right if that joke of a board felt he was competent enough to be principal of BHS.

Joke of a Board...RUN FOR A SEAT! Afraid people won't vote for you? Oh well, until everyone stops complaining and actually tries to do something about it...and stop sitting behind computers trying to run stuff, then let it be. OH...and DON'T YOU FORGET THAT...There are 5 Members on the board. It only takes 3 to approve something. So not everyone voted for things or put people in places. How about attend some of the board meetings and find out first hand what is going on and stop relying on hear say information before making assumptions. You know what happens when you "ASSUME" stuff! And if you don't, get someone to tell you. And I am pretty sure that I know more than you do and I am probably half your age! Never got involved until the "gossip" got "juicy" did you? Calvin Moore was a good principal, until he left and came back. I don't think students respond well to cursing and yelling and feeling like they are being bullied by an adult! Maybe his background is a little too rough for him to be principal. And then we want to know where our kids get bullying from and cursing...I am sure it is a HOME but with him...it was AT SCHOOL TOO! Personal Experience!

Why doesn't the friends of bertie group go after this instead of attacking the county manager and the county commissioners who are doing a good job and go after the mockery of what is known as the county board of education?

The truth must hurt. I ask again, where are the friends of bertie who want to overthrow our county government. I think John Davis would be a great czar, oh, I mean superintedant and Ron Wesson as pricipal and FEN Rascoe as attendance officer and maybe then his kuids would go to public school. We think things are bad now, how would it be under the rien of the three studges

You are right Anonymous that Bertie is a circus so why blame the superintendent? She is just a new ringmaster trying to get the acts under control! Trust me it is all too funny. I feel sorry for the woman because I am sure she didn't know she was coming to the circus. Let's get her some Bertie peanuts!

It appears to me that the Superintendent wanted Mr. Watford here for a reason. It is time for the Superintendent to step up to the plate and do the right thing. If you are as good as you are suppose to be in the first place this would not have been discussed with the public until the investigation revealed that there was something truly going on. That means you must have someone in your system that you can't trust cause for sure someone over there released this info to the press. Saying that Dr. Rollins where is your support for Mr. Watford, you wanted him here to make a difference and now you are going to let others destroy this man. You have got to be kidding me. You need to support Mr. Watford because you recruited him.
