POLICE: Traffic Lights Out? All Drivers Must Stop

Hundreds of traffic signals are not working because of the loss of power. There have already been multiple close calls by drivers speeding through intersections.

Authorities are reminding motorists when a signal is not working they must treat the intersection as a stop sign. That means all vehicles, regardless whether they are on a main street or not, must stop and make sure the intersection is clear before going through the intersection.

State law says only when a law enforcement officer, or another authorized person is directing traffic does this not apply.

North Carolina General Statute 20-158 (b) (6)

When a traffic signal is not illuminated due to a power outage or other malfunction, vehicles shall approach the intersection and proceed through the intersection as though such intersection is controlled by a stop sign on all approaches to the intersection. This subdivision shall not apply if the movement of traffic at the intersection is being directed by a law enforcement officer, another authorized person, or another type of traffic control device.

LOL running a red light? God the people in Wayne county and most places Cannot make a left turn. WE drive on the right so you should be on the right when you make that left turn. So sad to see people makeing a left turn on the left. Case in Point ..I was turning left onto a street and this fool not knowing how to make a left blocked the way so she could bo on the left side. I got out and said you need to make a left on the right side of the road so you can see what is comming. Guess she was not thinking because she sait thire for 15 minets then almost hit my car makeing a left on the left side of the road. squeezeing betueen my bumper and the curb. I allways wondered what cracker jack box she got her license. LOl my truck blocked the oncomming traffic an she almost had a wreck. All because she does not know how to make a left turn. O well only the stupid ones die!!!!

Doesn't matter if the Power is on or off, most of the time if the light turns red 5-6 more cars go through..

So true. We see people running red lights every day of the week. Funny thing is they don't get any further then we do and we don't run the red light. We get up to the next red light and there they are behind someone that didn't run that red light, they are all upset cause they had to stop. It makes you laugh. This is how people are killed, the red light runners. It only take a second to kill but you (the red light runners) could just stop at the red light and safe a live. All of those runners are very stupid people. They have to be stopped before killing someone. But sadly it will take killing someone for them to stop running the red lights. Think before running that light. It may be someone you know that you kill, I know you don't care if it is someone you don't know. The reason I say this is because if you did care you would not of ran the light in the first place.

If people did this in Jacksonville, there would be serious gridlock throughout the city.

Just another reason we need a real driving test instead of the rubber stamped one we have now. But the test now is nothing more than a way to collect money for the state.

The worst offenders are usually in a pickup truck wearing a camouflage hat. Too dumb to drive categorizes many of the people in my area.

Light at 91 and 13 snow hill was out this am...people on 13 not stopping, PD sitting few cars back should of done something. Out of state people and 18 wheelers are a major problem, will not slow down for nothing at intersections. Major intersections such as these should have patrol officers working them.

The last light leaving Greenville on 264 (by the Hess station) is an accident waiting to happen. I watched 2 different "almost" accidents because of people's disregard for others. They were pulling out in front of vehicles that had the right of way (as in already in the middle of the intersection) and then drove off completely unaware of what they had caused behind them...GPD said it wasn't their jurisdiction....but I bet if I said someone was committing a crime out there they would suddenly show up!

I've always assumed (especially that the question is asked on the written driver's exam)that when the traffic light is out, all traffic must stop before proceeding through the intersection. I've seen my share of people barreling through an intersection without slowing down or stopping. Seems like Governor Perdue needs to order the DMV to re-test these people as they shouldn't be on the road, nonetheless possessing a driver's license.
