Midwest Tornadoes Bring Back Bad Memories For Bertie County

The deadly tornadoes across the midwest are bringing back bad memories for people in the east who dealt with the same thing nearly a year ago.

Last April a system move through North Carolina killing 24 people--12 of those in Bertie County.

L.C. Hoggard III, Chairman of the Bertie County Board of Commissioners, says since last year they have upgraded their first responders preparedness plans, but says "No matter what type of preparedness you have in place when it hits, it seems like it's really not enough-but just to let the people of Bertie County know-we are in constant contact with our first responders-we're constantly upgrading our first responders on what needs to be done."

Morris Ford road in Colerain had four deaths along its stretch-three inside a family care center-which is now nothing but dirt and grass.

For Lucy Clemmons and Ollie Lee--who have had new homes built on the road--the tornado watches issued during WITN's weather alert day this past Friday had their nerves on edge. Clemmons says, "I went on my porch and I walked up and down my porch and I prayed-I prayed to God and I asked him please don't let another tornado come through-because we haven't gotten over the first one yet."

Ollie Lee says, "Everytime I see or hear about it, I just get sick in the stomach--and I'm just ready to leave this area at that time--but I'm trying to hang in there."

Storms in the mid-west...quick, close down the local schools.

LCR, they have an email you can send requests like that to, not on a page like this. EMS, yes, it beings back memories for a lot when storms go through but the point was Bertie county lost 12 PEOPLE, out of 24.

It also brings back the storms near Ayden/Eastern Pines area years ago. I will never forget the helpless feeling that night as my squad went door to door in the destroyed area. The smell of gas leaks, the residents in complete shock as we did our best in a horrible situation.

Witn, I understand that this is devastating and my heart goes out to the families but can you do a report on the Coast Guard crash in Alabama? One of the missing crew members is a guy I went to HS with from Greene County!
