County Manager Who Got Controversial Raise Leaving Martin County

A county manager who last month received a controversial $30,000 raise is leaving Martin County to become Carteret County's manager next month. No exact date has been set for his departure, but Russell Overman says he told the board of commissioners he will stay long enough to get them through the budget approval process. He accepted the job with Carteret County Monday night and informed the Martin County board Tuesday.

Overman says he was looking for other employment only because he wanted a pay raise. That's when Martin County offered his salary of $113, 913. He will make an additional $16,087 with his new $130,000 annual salary in Carteret County

Last month county commissioners increased Overman's salary from $83,913 to $113,913 a year after they got wind he was interviewing at other places. They gave him the raise in an attempt to keep him in Martin County. Hundreds of people commented on about the raise. Some said he deserved it. Others said he didn't or that it was a bad idea in hard economic times.

Overman has been Martin County manager for six and a half years and did not receive a pay raise several of those years. Overman says Martin County has been a great place to work and he and his family have enjoyed living there.

The Martin County Board of Commissioners will meet at 5:00pm Friday to discuss who will replace Overman. The meeting is open to the public, and then the board will go into closed session for a final discussion.

If I read it right Mr Overman said that he really loved living in Martin County ...the people etc....OK then Now he's leaving the county for a better paying job. It's ALL about the money. He has a price just like everybody else that hols a "HIGH Paying position" in the county. He talked a good talk to the commissioners but he saw SUCKER written on every one of their faces...I wonder if he'll get the county employees to help him move like he got them to help him put up that barn in his yard???? Will our tax money pay them this time TOO?????? WAKE UP martin county...They should have taken that money they used for his raise and give it to the teachers...evidently they don't care about the education in Martin County either.Just wait til Friday when they have the ground breaking for the "NEW" middle school....Let's see how much more in debt they can get the county just keeps getting sadder and sadder. It doesn't surprise me why people don't want to come here anymore !

WHY IN GOD'S HOLY NAME should the money be given to teachers? Nobody does a more lousy job and gets paid so well. PLEASE!!! The general public are waking up and stopping this nonsense of praying at the alter or public school teachers! It is high time teachers started perforning, stopped whinning and produced some acceptable results or GET OUT OF OUR CLASSROOMS!!!!

I've lived in Martin County all my life, and the DUMBEST people here ARE THE COMMISSIONERS..They are the poorest excuse for people I've ever seen. They ask people to keep business here in town..and THEY themselves don't even do that. They are too interested in what someone will give them for shopping out of the county. There's ONE commissioner that is well off and he NEVER gives any business to local people. It's all about what kind of trips (or kickbacks as he calls it) he can get for his family. I think ALL the commissioners should be fired and new ones elected. They need to practice what they preach !!!

Thats what happens when you cheap out and won't pay folks. They'd have to pay me more than $130,000 to take a County Manager position. They are literally responsible for EVERYTHING and when something goes wrong it's their fault regardless of whether it is or not. They're train of thought changes every 5 minutes, sewer expansion one minute and then some yankee import calling a complaining about something the next. The only problem is he accepted Carteret County. THe life span for a manager in Carteret is about 5 months. Poor choice dude.

YANKEE IMPORT!!!!!! I beg your pardon.....I'm a PROUD YANKEE and a very productive member of Martin Co...been here 7 yrs and employeed by the Co for almost you need to keep your NAME CALLING to yourself........this has nothing to do with where a person is born and's about the dedication and loyalty to do a great job for your town and county. I have had several opportunities to go where more money is but my loyalty is in Williamston.

Wow! $113K sounds like a bargain compared to our Manager. He was given a 46% raise. It's not any better in Bertie and I am a Martin County native.

I agree 100%. You cannot blame a man for doing what is best for him and his family. You are worth what someone will pay for your services. If someone commenting here wants to "spread the wealth" you need to re-think your political affiliation because you probably call yourself a conservative Republican, but you are talking like a liberal Democrat! Congratulations Russell!

Miracles do happen! Just don't understand why it took so long for this clown's time to expire.
