Man Dies In Martin County House Fire

Deputies in Martin County are trying to determine exactly how a man died in a house fire Sunday morning.

Dead is 61-year-old Fred Whitehurst of Jamesville. Lt. Drew Robinson tells WITN News that the fire at Whitehurst's home on Mill Road broke out around 1:00 a.m.

He says when firefighters arrived they found the home fully involved in fire. After the blaze was extinguished they discovered the man's body inside.

Robinson says there's no evidence to suspect foul play though they are awaiting an autopsy which should determine the cause of death.

There is no word yet on how the fire began and the SBI has been called in to help investigate.

Fred was a sweet man, he always had a smile for everyone. He would do anything he could to help you, and ask nothing in return. He will be missed!

I find it a honor and priviledge to have been blessed to know one of the kindest, loving, and caring people on the face of this earth. I am married to Uncle Winfred's nephew Earnest and from the first day I met him he had a piece of my heart. I wish everyone had a heart like his. I pray he is now in God's loving arms. I miss you and love you....trish

Truly a nice man. He shared his life with others, gave of his time and effort to help those who needed him with no thought for his own profit. How many of us can say that?

"Winfred" as we called him was a great man. He was kind and gentel and had a heart of gold. He would do anything he could to help anyone out. I worked with him and great times with him. I will miss seeing his smile when he saw me. RIP FRED!!
