Authorities are trying to find out how a loaded semi-automatic handgun was left in an Eastern Carolina jail.
Sheriff John Holley say a jailer discovered the weapon inside a women's restroom in the lobby of the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail in Windsor.
The loaded gun was found underneath a trash bag that was in a trash can. Authorities say visitors to the jail have access to that restroom, but not inmates.
Jail Director Craig Freeman says the gun was discovered July 14th.
There are no metal detectors in the lobby, but authorities are exploring the possibility of getting them. Until then, Freeman says they're looking at using hand-held metal detectors for added security.
The restrooms are now locked and those wishing to use them will have to get the key from an officer.
