A Bertie County bus driver has been suspended after an 8-year-old walked miles to get to her grandmother's house. Her mother says the school bus dropped her off at the wrong location even after she called the school twice to tell them where her child needed to go.
Shandell Harris says she knew she would not be home last Thursday afternoon, so she asked the school to drop her daughter off at her grandmother's house a few miles away. This is the first time she's ever had her child dropped off at a different location, but she says she notified the school the day before and again that morning.
Harris says her children have always taken the school bus at West Bertie Elementary School, but last Wednesday she says she notified the school that her kids would need to be taken to their grandmother's house on Thursday. Harris says she has no transportation and was caring for her mother after she had a stroke. When the bus arrived at four o'clock Thursday, her 8-year-old daughter Kamya was not on it. Kayma had been dropped off at home, instead of at her grandmother's. So Kamya started walking to her grandmother's nearly three miles away. Along the way, two different drivers picked her up.
"I feel like i did everything right, as far as going by the book as far as going through procedures to get your child to ride a different bus to get dropped off elsewhere," said Harris.
Harris says she would like to thank both drivers who helped her daughter get to her grandmother's house.
She says Kamya returned to school Monday, but now has a different bus driver who takes her home. Harris tells me, she plans on taking legal action.
Bertie County Schools tells WITN the bus driver was suspended for three days without pay and they are taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen again.
