Bertie County Tuesday officially moved from its volunteer EMS system to a private one.
The company is called First Med and is based out of Wilmington. They have operations in six other states.
The service will operate 24 hours a day with eight members on duty at a given time operating four ambulances across three locations in the county: Aulander, Windsor, and Colerain.
First Med will operate on a $310,000 budget.
The county manager says that they've signed a five-year contract with First Med.
