Bear Grass Reopens As Charter School

After a four year struggle, a local school in Martin County reopened this morning as a charter school.

More than 260 students are now a part of the new Bear Grass Charter School. It's a dream come true for members of the BGCS Board of Directors that fought since 2008 to open the school again.

The Martin County Board of Education shut down the community school in a consolidation move. Community leaders then tried to turn Bear Grass into a charter school, but that application was denied the first time around.

After the state cap on charter schools was lifted, Bear Grass went through the Fast Track Application process to get their charter status this spring. The school then had to sue the public school system this summer to use the vacant building.

Since then volunteers have worked to get the school cleaned up and ready for today's opening.

Tammy Cratt's daughter decided she wanted to return to Bear Grass for her senior year, and Cratt has mixed feelings about it. "It's bittersweet, it's been a long time coming," said the mom. "I'm really glad to see her at a smaller school."

All in all, everyone we spoke to this morning are relieved to have Bear Grass School open again.
