Martin County Residents Tackle Annexation Fight

Forced to pay higher taxes is what homeowners in Martin County will have to do if a proposed annexation is passed.

Residents who believe they are being forced into the Williamston city limits took their fight in front of the County Commissioners Wednesday night.

On May 3rd, Williamston city officials decided to annex over 200 homes in the Country Club area, Cedar Hill Subdivision along with two other subdivisions.

The 'Martin County Citizens Against Annexation' presented a resolution to county commissioners asking them to help change the laws of forced annexation in North Carolina.

A decision on the annex is expected to come later this year.

North Carolina is one of only four states that allows forced annexation.

I realize that these annexations have to be done by increments at times in order to meet the requirements of state laws but it is way past time that this happened. Annexation can proceed along a highway, taking in no other property or residents, until the city limits reach a desired area for the annexation of homes and businesses. It has been done all over the state and has been upheld in the courts. This one needs to be completed as quickly as possible so the next one that will take the Williamston town limits all the way down the US 17 corridor to the Big Mill Rd and down the Bear Grass Rd all the way to it's intersections with the Ralph Taylor Rd and Henry Mizelle Rd can proceed. This should take everything on Ralph Taylor Rd, part of the Bear Trap Rd and everything north of Ralph Taylor Rd all the way to the existing town limits into the town limits of Williamston. Hey, you gotta go where the money is, these people have the most and have paid the least for far too long.

This has everything to do with consoloidation. Both actions are part of a grand scheme by the Williamston Gods (the few who know what is best for everyone) to make Williamston and Williamston High School predominately white. School redistricting is next. Wait and see.

'Curious Cat' & 'Anon' sound like members of the rapid response team for the city lobbyists, the NCLM. They certainly do have the canned 'talking points' down pat. The "freeloader argument" that turns the original 1959 annexation law upside down is nearly all the lobbyists have left to defend this Un-American practice. Supposedly, the cities were given this power to provide services to landowners who needed them, now it is all about the cites being "owed" something (your money) just because they exist. The law has become cover for municipal theft and financial mismanagement. Stop FORCED annexation and the viable cities will keep growing through VOLUNTARY annexation, which is how 85% of annexation occurs. Unless, of course, the city isn't providing anything worth the price of being a city taxpayer and should probably cease to exist instead of being put on artificial life support using the 'shot gun wedding' approach with it's neighbors. Join the fight:

just pay your taxes and everything should be fine. 4000 or 5000 more in taxes is not a lot of money your most of your houses are paid for.

Just like all of you Williamston folks said during the consolidation "do what is best for your community". Pay your taxes and shut up!! If you live out that should be able to pay! Well you could be like a Martin Co BOE members, he does not to pay his taxes!!! Life goes on!!! Move to Jamesville!!!

"Chunkles", this doesn't have anything to do with consolidation except the one common theme, "suck it up and do what's best for the whole". That is what you Green clad hypocrits said about school consolidation. Well, all you green clad, hypocritical annexation victims (or benefactors) should follow the same advice that you were spewing then, "suck it up, shut it up and do what's best for the whole". "Curious Cat", HAA HAAaaaaa!! how silly? Who among us residents of the county want to go downtown Williamston??? Why would we want to go to the land of the cracked out zombies?? It often looks like a scene from "Night of the Living Dead" in downtown Williamston!! CHARMING way of life????? That is a real knee slapper!!! HAAA Haaaaa!!!! Williamston is dumpy slum! Nobody's interested in hanging out in a slum except a certain kind of people! Not that Parmele is any better or anything.....just saying....

It is amazing how people who are not able to vote for city councils are treated. In Greenville they are doing the same thing. The area where the new Walmart is to be built is in an area that is surrounded by people outside of city limits. If you are outside of city limits you cannot vote in their elections. It is amazing that some on the council turn down rezoning when it is in areas where people can actually vote for them. The whole lot of them are crooked and if you can't see that then maybe you should pay extra.

It is a shame that class envy has monopolized this forum Green eyed envy Freedom as an American citizen is the topic freedom as a North Carolinian not beating up on a neighborhood of people that worked and did not whine to get what they wanted Your President preaches class envy and some of you are very good students.
