Troopers: He Looked Down To Get A Cell Phone

A 16-year-old out of Bertie County has died after he got into a car accident Friday.

It happened just before 9am that morning. Highway patrol says 16-year-old Mark Eric Baggett Jr was driving his pick-up truck along RP 1304 when he over corrected the steering wheel.

He would go off the road to the right and hit a culvert pipe and a mailbox. His vehicle would over turn and come to rest on it's top.

A spokesperson for Highway Patrol says Baggett Jr was looking down to get a cell phone when the accident happened.

Sgt. M.W. Warren says Baggett Jr was traveling 70 miles an hour in a 55.

Warren says Baggett Jr was not wearing his seat belt.

Baggett Jr.'s 16-year-old passenger had no life threatening injuries. He is 16 as well.
