It's quite the mystery -- after a Bertie county man picked up a package that turned out to be a person’s ashes.
The sheriff's office says the man found the ashes along cooper hill road in a watertight plastic container with the id card of the deceased. The ashes turned out to be those of a Pennsylvania man from 2006.
Authorities aren't sure exactly how the ashes got into the man's yard, but they think the ashes may have been shipped to a wrong address, possibly stolen and then dumped when the person found out exactly what the package contained.
Authorities are checking records to see where the ashes were shipped, and by what means they were shipped. Deputies are contacting residents along Cooper Hill Road where the ashes were found, trying to find out if anyone is related to the deceased.
There is nothing criminal suspected in the man's death at this time.
