Bob Martin Ag Center Opens New Barn

The ribbon was cut on a new barn Wednesday that could help a huge facility in the East host even bigger events.

The Senator Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center in Martin County officially opened its new barn Wednesday afternoon. The new barn at the Martin County facility adds more than 150 new horse stalls to the center. That will increase the center's capacity to 456 and allow for larger horse shows.

The center was built in 1998. Last year it drew more than 5,300 horses and 13,000 people, with an estimated local economic impact of more than $4 million.

Have to agree with M.Bland on some of the issues..The center is awesome, host alot of events but what becomes of the monies???? Martin Co like alot of neighboring counties does need attention, roads, ditches, drainage...know for a fact a new 4 lane was built with an exit in Everetts and that caused problems with drainage.. water ponds up on private properties, farm land and farming is one of the most important money "bringers" in the county.....

I am curious - with all these problems you've found with the area, what are YOU DOING to help improve them? Are you yourself actually doing something to improve those flaws you stated, or just stating them? Part of the problem or part of the solution. Have you been to Ag Center and seen it's impact first hand? Been a part of it in some way? Just curious.

Most people in Martin County are VERY happy to have the Ag Center. There is some people in This County that would not be happy if they won a Million dollars...they would just complain about the taxes they have to pay. Martin County is VERY fortunate to have the Ag Center. It brings lots of dollars to this county and employees Martin County Residents. Anyone who does not think this place brings money, they need to go the the restaurnats, gas stations, Walmart and motels on weekends there is horse show in Town. We are also fortunate to have a very good and skilled staff working there...Durward Taylor, Keith Whitaker and all the other ladies and gentlemen do a outstanding job of accomadating the needs of people using the Ag Center. So a BIG thanks to all who had input in getting this building in Martin County and to the fine staff that operates it and that includes the Meeting Center too. It is used a lot for birthday parties, reunions and Etc. Thanks again SBMEAC. MC Resident

I would think Martin County would be happy, considering that means more people spending more money locally in their area, a few more jobs during show season too for people to maintain the barns. Have you brought this to your representative's attention?? I thought not.

Martin County is not opening another barn, the State of North Carolina however is. This is a state not a county complex. I am sure the county is in someway involved but we do get money from these shows to our local business so bring on more barns!

Don't ya think when those huge horse shows are held that thousands of people will come dump their money into Martin County, causing it to grow???? This will quickly pay for more than just the new barn, it will pay the taxes so your subs can switched for real teachers, you can fix better roads, and animals can have a better life, and you can have better restaurants to eat in....did ya think of the long term impact of money coming into the county that otherwise wouldn't be there? Now there's a thought, a very good one! Good Job Martin County!!!

martin county is opening another ag barn wow! why dont they used their money for fixing our roads & cleaning our ditches so water doesnt back up on our property's, why dont they build a shelter at the pound for these poor animals instead of the tombs they so call kennels they have there, why doesnt martin county use the money to get more teachers to come in instead of these people they call subs that know nothing about what they are there for, they cant even teach our children, so they sit there & waste martin county opps i mean tax payers money, yes martin county stop worrying about opening new horse barns & putting up more places to eat. like we dont have enough, why dont you try helping our community instead of hindering us,
