Man Charged With 39 Animal Cruelty Counts

A man with a history of animal problems has been arrested on 39 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty after authorities say they found 46 dogs and three cats in his Lewiston home last month.

Stephen Kyprianides turned himself into authorities Wednesday morning. He told WITN that the animals are his family and was concerned that they would be adopted out.

Last month authorities say the animals produced near-lethal ammonia levels at Kyprianides' home. A state veterinarian says the ammonia levels were the highest she'd ever seen.

Sheriff Greg Atkins says this isn't the first time Kyprianides has had dog trouble. Twelve years ago New York authorities found the man with 15 dogs, 16 cats, 30 pigeons and an iguana, all found in insanitary conditions.

The 68-year-old man was also charged back in 2004 in Hertford County with the unlawful disposing of domesticated dead animals. Authorities say Kyprianides was putting dead animals in mini-storage.

He was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond and is not allowed to own any animals until his case is heard.
