Sheriff: Two Home Invasions Connected

Authorities in Bertie County are investigating two home invasions on Sunday that left one man dead and another wounded.

Both shootings happened in the same neighborhood in Colerain.

Dead is 54-year-old Larry Daniel Harrell from an apparent gunshot wound. Harrell was staying over at Ned Freeman's home, who is the second victim.

Sheriff Greg Atkins says the first call they received involved the shooting of Freeman. They say he was spending the night at his girlfriend's home when 3-4 people burst into her home and shot the man. Freeman is at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Several hours later they got a second call that Harrell's body was found next door at Freeman's home.

So far there have been no arrests in either shooting.

Previous Story

Bertie County Sheriff Charles Greg Atkins confirms to WITN that a man's body was found dead in his home Sunday Morning. It happened in the town of Colerain.

Atkins would not say how the man died but did say they are investigating the death as a homicide.

The man's home was broken into and Atkins says as many as four people may be involved in the home invasion.

Just hours before that there was another home invasion.

Atkins says his department got that call about 5am Sunday morning in the same neighborhood.

The Sheriff says the victim's home was broken into and he was shot.

The victim was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.

Sheriff Atkins says, "if these two home break-ins are not connected it would be a coincidence."

The Sheriff did not release the name of the victims due to next of kin being notified.

Why is there no more imformation on the murder in Colerain? Is the person who was killed not important enough to keep looking for who did this,or are you waiting for someone else to be killed, before the police do anything?

This man who survived the shooting, Ned Freeman, is a convicted felon (DRUGS). The shooter/ shooters were no doubt looking for him and shot an innocent person. Ned , you need to take your nonsense and foolish behavior (slinging) out of Colerain, Bertie Co. and go somewhere. As you can now see, your behavior has finally cost someone their life.

If you clean up the Bottom and get rid of the drugs maybe things like this would not happen!!! The bottom is a terrible place and needs some clean up. I go by their all the time and looks scary to me!!!! Less drinking and drugs work out in the yard and clean up the place.

It is shame you cannot even sleep in your own home without someone breaking in.Let alone being killed.I have dogs and would never be without them,at least then I know someone is in my home, and believe me I will make sure whoever is breaking in will not walk out.It is a shame you can't even fell safe in your own home in this small town.I am sure someone will find out who did this and the perps will be caught,at least I hope so.If anyone knows anything about this please help bring these people to justice, one way or the other.I think the people in Colerain should get a reward going, that will be a help I am sure, especially now that everyone knew these two men.So lets work toteather and get these people. All my prayers go out to Larys family.

If there isnt any suspects arrested, how do you all know it was some "thugs"??? At this point it may have been anyone!!! Im quite sure that the "wanna be thugs" don't have the type of heart to take someones life!! My prayers go out to the Harrell's family and also Ned Freedman! Also the comment about hanging them, I dont feel as if that is possible lynching should be illegal! Yes, I know they took an innocent person life but everyone deserves a second chance to be forgave!! Lynching them will not make the situation any better! I am from COLERAIN, and I feel as if there were more social functions and positive organizations held for youth we may not be accusing the "wanna be thugs!!"
