Bertie Prison Chief Reassigned

The NC Department of Prisons has reassigned the man who was the adminstrator of Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor.

Anthony Hathaway III has been reassigned to the Greenville office within the Division of Prisons, according to Keith Acree, the public information officer for the department.

Acree says Willie Davis, the assistant superintendent at Bertie Correctional Institution, is now in charge.

Acree would not comment on why Hathaway was reassigned. When asked, Acree responded, "It is a personnel matter, and I will not discuss that."

The reassignment of Hathaway follows a former correctional officer at Bertie Correctional Institution getting charged for having sex with an inmate.

Tameka Mebane told WITN she did have two-month relationship with a prison inmate. Mebane says the inmate is not the father of the baby she is carrying. Windsor police say Mebane admitted the inmate was the father during a police interview.

Finally! Lets just hope that ALL things that Hathaway covered up are looked into. The investigations that he would assign on workplace harassment and then wouldnt even release the staffs statements for the investigatation, so there went another swept under the rug. If you were one of Hathaways "people" or "girls" you didnt have anything to worry about, you could get caught as a sgt. with drugs in your car and maybe a year later get promoted to asst. unit manager. Come on people open your eyes Hathaway is to blame for alot that happened and is still happening at BCI. If he would have took corrective action from the git-go then alot of this would have been "nipped in the bud" along time ago. He was not ready to run a 1000 man max security prison, after all did he even ever work in atleast a close custody prison? Come on now there are alot of people at blame here but Hathaway has always, since BCI opened its doors been a man of a thousand cover ups!!!!

It is nice to finally see what one deserves. Hathaway started his first job with DOC with my Father in Williamston, NC. He was underhanded even then just learning. He always made sure he had women on staff to cover up for him for everything. Like one other person said, one day it does catch up with you. I am glad I got to see it although my Father did not. Take your demotion - it should have happened before now. You such a disgrace to the system.

After reading all these blogs during these two incidents couple of things bother me. One is that these people make ignorant comments on how smart a Corrections Officer is and how messed up these prisons are. Just for one day, I would like for these people to walk in a prison dorm, supervise a dining hall with 300 inmates eating, or have to transport a serial killer to court. Just walk in my shoes one day, and I gurantee they will see what kind of job this is. The general public has no idea what goes on in a prison besides what people tell them. We are employees just like others feeding our families, paying our taxes and being productive citizens. But all I see is ignorance from people who are glad it is people like us who keep murderers, rapist. thieves, child molesters, drug pushers and the like behind bars. Just one day for all these people who are above being a correctional employee come on over take the challenge and work here locked up 12 hrs with inmates ok!!!!!!

Theodis Beck,PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK. Look at the mess in Community Corrections. DOC is in just as bad of shape. This has not happened since January, so you cannot say that Gov. Perdue, Sec. Keller or Mrs. Lancaster had anything to do with it. They at least are making attempts to correct and change the messess made by people such as Mr. Beck Mr. Guy and the mile long list of Good Ole Boys who controlled Corrections for so long. The problem is so many people in charge that have lost touch with day to day operations in a correctional facility and people who want all the power and authority up to the point where something goes wrong and then they want to either deny knowledge or shift blame. All to often people at the top lose touch with the bottom and are not open to change or suggestions and when you reach that point it is time to go home.Bertie is not the only prison having these type problems, they just happened to make the news. Check with any prison in Eastern N.C. and you will see.

What the DOC needs is former Secretary Beck back. Keller does not know what he is doing at all. Lancater is calling all shorts and certainly does know what she is doing. She didn't know when she was here the first time. French who thats what I say. Get them all out og there and this Department will be a better place. The Governor has certainly messed up the agency in just a short term. Good old boy syndrome is right in her cabinet positions.

I also agree with former Officer..seen it several times myself...cover it up..Dept of Corruption said it best! Mr. Keller said "accountability"--show me! Families broken up! Was adultery last I knew. BCI, PCI..list goes on..their all the same. There are good Officers out there, just trying to do their job and have to live with this. Why are there so many comments on these pages...because we have been putting up with it so long. We are tired of it and finally getting to speak out without fear or retaliation.
