A woman trying to save a turtle's life on a highway ended up losing her own.
The Highway Patrol says 70-year-old Mary Kathryn Kramer of Clawson, Michigan was trying to help a turtle on Highway 264 at the Beaufort-Pitt County line just after 6 p.m. Sunday. Troopers say Kramer was in the lane of traffic, when an 84-year-old driver hit her. The woman hit in the road was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver said she didn't see the woman in the road.
No charges are currently pending.
A friend told the Highway Patrol that the victim was an avid pet lover.
Troopers say a second vehicle stopped and someone in that vehicle managed to move the turtle to safety.
