Deputies say a 19-year-old Washington man died Wednesday night after swimming with friends in a pond in Washington County.
Washington County deputies identify the victim as Hashawn Cherry, who goes by Shawn.
The teen's body was recovered around 7:15 p.m. by members of the Sydney Dive Team, Washington COunty EMS and personnel from the Plymouth Fire Department.
Deputies say Cherry and three other young men were swimming off of a small boat in the pond on Long Ridge Road. They say after swimming for a short time, friends noticed Cherry struggling to stay afloat.
The friends were unable to help Cherry and they called 911 after getting back to shore.
Cherry was a student at Beaufort Community College and a graduate of Washington High School.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office and Sidney Dive Team from Beaufort County have recovered the body of a man who went under the water in a pond Wednesday night.
Dispatchers with the Washington County Sheriff's Office tell WITN the call came in around 6:30 that a 20-year-old man was missing in a pond.
Officials on scene tell us the man was swimming with friends when he went under. Friends tried to save him but were unable.
The victim's name hasn't been released yet.
