The Highway Patrol said a Vanceboro man died in a Sunday night wreck just outside of Chocowinity.
Highway Patrol dispatchers said while the wreck is still under investigation, the preliminary report shows that 45-year-old David Earl Smith of Vanceboro was behind the wheel in this single-vehicle wreck.
Investigators said around 9:30 Sunday night, Smith was heading south along U.S. 17, seven miles outside of Chocowinity, when he crossed the center line, ran off the road, and was thrown from his vehicle.
Dispatchers said Smith was killed at the scene of that wreck.
Smith was the only one inside the vehicle, according to dispatchers.
Officials said alcohol was a factor in this crash.
The DOT said a section of U.S. 17 was closed for nearly two hours around 10:15 p.m. a crews worked to clear the scene of the wreck.
