The son of a woman found dead in her burned home has been charged with her murder and faced a judge Thursday as she was laid to rest.
Herbert Heath Jr. of Washington was charged Tuesday for the murder of Mildred Heath.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says the 62-year-old woman was found dead in her home on Cherry Run Road early Saturday morning.
Beaufort County deputies say Heath was arrested at the Days Inn Motel in Washington as a result of information gathered during their investigation and at the autopsy.
Major Kenneth Watson says the autopsy indicates Mildred Heath was dead before the fire started.
The 38-year-old Heath had a first court appearance Thursday in Beaufort County. Deputies say he is being held without bond and say additional charges against Heath are expected.
The funeral for Mildred Heath was at 11 a.m. at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Greenville.
