A registered sex offender is back behind bars today on several charges, including living too close to a middle school.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says they arrested 48 year old Harley Ray Alligood, Jr. He's charged with second degree burglary, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of a firearm by a felon, failure to report change of address, and sex offender residential restriction violation.
Deputies say the investigation into Alligood started with a breaking and entering into a home on Molly Lane in Washington on January 18. Lawmen say when they made contact with their possible suspect, they were able to see items stolen from the house on Molly Lane inside the suspect's home.
Further investigation revealed their suspect was also a registered sex offender who was not living at his registered address. Convicted sex offenders are required to notify law enforcement of any change in their address. The law also prohibits them from living within 1,000 feet of a school or child care facility. Lawmen say Alligood was also in violation of living too close to Chocowinity Middle School..
When lawmen executed a search warrant on Alligood's home, deputies say they recovered stolen property and other evidence.
Alligood had already been jailed on a previous probation violation when deputies served him with the new criminal charges. He remains in the Beaufort County Detention Center on an additional $25,000 bond, and lawmen expect to file more charges against him.
