A large Beaufort County employer said company cuts take effect Tuesday, 22 days before the Christmas holiday.
PCS Phosphate Company Inc., known as PotashCorp Aurora, made the announcement Tuesday that 85 workers will lose their jobs.
In an email regarding the cuts, the company cites sustainability efforts that came from a company-wide review of business and how current operations effect the company in a global marketplace.
"We are focused on ensuring this process is respectful of our employees and their families," wrote Aurora General Manager Steve Beckel. "We will work to help those affected through this challenging time."
In July of this year, the company earned the Carolina Star, the highest safety recognition given by the state.
The company said they will retain 810 of their current staff members.
