Washington police arrested two men who both said they were passengers in a van that flipped on Highway 17 late Wednesday night.

The wreck was reported on the drawbridge of Highway 17 near West Main St. in Washington at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday. Washington police responded and arrested two men they said ran from the crash.

Lt. William Chrismon with the Washington Police Department says there were no witnesses to the crash, so they're not able to prove who was behind the wheel when the minivan hit a railing and flipped over. Both Sergio Esturado of Washington and Miguel Ponte of Greenville told police they were passengers in the minivan. Chrismon says it's not clear if there was anyone else in the vehicle, but officers believe one of the two men arrested was likely the driver.

Esturado and Ponte were charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Neither had injuries.

There was minor damage to the railing on the bridge, Chrismon said. However, the DOT checked the railing and determined it was safe for regular travel.
