A local environmental group is holding a meeting Tuesday night about one company's controversial proposal to build an open pit mine.
Marietta Mines is pursuing building an open pit limestone mine planned for the Blount's Creek area on the Craven-Beaufort County line. Beaufort County officials said the Marietta Mines plan would lead to 9 million gallons of water being discharged daily, which would impact four of the county's water wells and the 9,000 people they serve.
The Pamlico-Tar River Foundation will host an informational, panel-style meeting discussing the current status of Blount's Creek and potential impacts that may occur from the proposed Martin Marietta Mine.
The meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday night at the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church in Washington.
