A bridge on Highway 33 between Chocowinity and Greenville that has been deemed to be structurally deficient and functionally obsolete is going to be replaced.
The Department of Transportation anticipates work will get underway April 30th for the $4.2-million bridge replacement on N.C. 33 over the Norfolk Southern Railway near Chocowinity. The work is expected to continue through April, 2014.
The existing bridge was built in 1935. The NCDOT says the bridge is not unsafe, but there are elements of the bridge that needed to be monitored to maintain its structural integrity.
In it's notification of the project, the DOT did not say if the bridge will have to be shutdown or if it will remain open during construction.
