Wrestlers from across the east met in Washington for a memorial tournament that’s closing in on a decade running.

The 9th Annual Eli Saleeby Lee Memorial Wrestling Tournament took place at Washington High School.

Wrestling teams from Pamlico County, Hertford County, West craven, White Oak, Dixon, Edenton Holmes, Ayden Grifton, Nash Central and Greene Central joined with the host Pam Pack to raise funds for the Washington High wrestling team and athletics booster club.

The tournament is named after Eli Saleeby Lee, a Washington high wrestler who died in a car accident at the age of 16 back in 2005.

Organizers say the tournament celebrates wrestling, while also providing a teachable moment.

"These kids, when they're here at the tournament, they get to see what happened in the car wreck and they're not invincible,” said Beth Saleeby, Eli’s mother, “I think they learn some of their vulnerability which they need, because teenagers driving, you've got to learn that there's a bunch of people in the back seat and that's your family and anyone who loves you and you need to drive accordingly."
