Former Washington High Coach Dave Smith Passes Away

 There will be a Celebration of Life service on Sunday, July 27, 2014, 4:00 p.m. at the Washington High School Performing Arts Center.

A high school coaching legend here in Eastern Carolina has passed away.

Former Washington High School Coach Dave Smith died this morning, according to Hillside Funeral Home.

The funeral home says the 82-year-old Smith was admitted Tuesday to Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

Smith was basketball coach at Washington from 1972 to 1991. He had a 520-233 coaching record, including a 56-game winning streak.

Smith coached Dominique Wilkins, and his teams had nine conference championships, back-to-back state crowns, and four state runner-up seasons.

There will be a Celebration of Life service on Sunday, July 27, 2014, 4:00 p.m. at the Washington High School Performing Arts Center.
