Chocowinity EMS Becomes First Paramedic Squad In County

While one door to medical care has now closed at Vidant Pungo Hospital, another has opened up for people who need medical attention in Beaufort County.

The Chocowinity EMS squads will be the first deemed a paramedic squad in the county on Tuesday.

Chairman of the Chocowinity EMS Board, Jay McRoy, said they have been operating on an intermediate level for years.

The new distinction means workers will be able to offer medications and do more to stabilize patients when transferring them to the hospital.

With nearly 30 staff members on board, Chocowinity EMS takes more than 1,000 emergency calls a year.

McRoy said they are funded partly by Beaufort County tax dollars, billings for transfers, as well as fundraisers.

The Chocowinity EMS will host a reception to celebrate their achievement at their headquarters on Tuesday afternoon.
