Carmike Says FBI Has Identified Bomb Threat Suspect

The FBI says it has identified the person they believe made bomb threats at Carmike theaters across the country last Friday.

Theater locations in several Eastern Carolina cities were temporarily closed as authorities searched them for possible explosives. In Havelock, a Marine Corps bomb squad was brought in after bomb-sniffing dogs alerted to something inside the theater. Nothing was ever found.

"The FBI has identified the person responsible for the bomb threats that occurred last Friday, August 17, 2012 involving Carmike Cinemas and believes he is no longer a threat", Carmike said in a brief statement.

The FBI in Atlanta says the case remains a pending investigation.

Bomb threats closed down multiple Carmike theaters in Eastern Carolina, including ones in Havelock and Washington.

All of the locations have since reopened.

Havelock police say Carmike corporate contacted their local theater telling them there was a bomb threat at their locations. The theater chain has some 200 locations nationwide.

Lt. B.J. Borton says bomb dogs from Cherry Point were sent in and one of the dogs had a hit. Since then the bomb squad has sent in a robot and team member to conduct a sweep of the theater.

Borton, who is scene commander, says a half-mile area was blocked off. Around 2:45 p.m. the all clear was given and police reopened roads and businesses.

In addition to Havelock and Washington, theaters in Fayetteville, Wilmington and Durham were also evacuated Friday as a precaution.

Carmike spokesman Terrell Mayton said company officials alerted the FBI after discovering the threat in a voicemail message Friday morning. He says the call was placed afterhours Thursday by someone claiming to work for a contractor that provides janitorial services to Carmike.

Mayton said the call threatened specific theaters, but he could not say how many or in what states.

Police in Washington said they thoroughly searched the Carmike at Washington Square Mall this morning and discovered nothing unusual.

Jacksonville police say they checked their Carmike theater behind the Jacksonville Mall as well and found no problems.
