Deputies say a fire which destroyed a Beaufort County car business is suspicious.
Six firefighters were injured at the massive blaze at Coastal Car Connection on Highway 264 West outside of Washington. Now, the State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office with the investigation of the blaze.
John Pack, Emergency Services Director, says five firefighters were treated for heat-related issues. "This was a super hot fire on a super hot night," Pack said.
Another firefighter was injured when he partially fell through the roof of the burning building. All six firefighters were treated at Beaufort Vidant Hospital in Washington and released.
"The hospital did a great job last night," Pack said. "This was a mini-mass casualty, if you will. We were blessed that no one was seriously injured."
In addition to the firefighters, Pack said one of the owners of the business was taken to the hospital for heat-related issues. He became overheated as he tried to move things out of the burning building.
Pack said the fire, as bad as it was, could have been worse. Firefighters were successful in preventing the flames from spreading to a body shop in the back of the building that houses chemicals. Pack said if that caught fire, "You would have seen it in Greenville."
Clarks Neck Fire Department, Washington Fire Department, Washington EMS, Chocowinity EMS and Broad Creek EMS all responded to the scene, along with other firefighters who responded on their own from various agencies.
The flames were reported shooting through the roof of the building just before 9:00 Tuesday night.
EMS was called to the scene several times but it's unknown at this time what injuries there may be or how serious.
