WITN spoke to a man charged with abusing his horse after riding it into Bath in Beaufort County last month. He admits he hit the horse, but says it is not a case of animal cruelty.
Scott Southerland of Pinetown is charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. The sheriff's department says they got a report Southerland hit the horse several times with a fishing rod while in the parking lot of a business in bath. Southerland tells WITN he did not beat the horse but he did use the fishing rod as a "crop" to get the horse under control.
Southerland was arrested Monday and his bond was set a $5,000. The court ordered the horse to be returned to Southerland.
