The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office was first accredited in 2006 by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
Out of the 100 Sheriff's Offices in the state, only five are accredited. The others are Durham, Forsyth, Cumberland and Hoke counties. Those departments must comply with some 400 applicable standards of professionalism in order to maintain accredited status.
