A member of the Beaufort County Board of Elections has been removed because he made a motion to endorse a Republican U.S. Senate candidate at a tea party meeting.
The State Board of Elections unanimously voted Friday to kick Delma Blinson off the board.
State board chairman Josh Howard said at the meeting that local board members were warned this summer that the state board was going to aggressively enforce rules they must abstain from political activity to preserve their objectivity,
Blinson's motion at the October meeting endorsed Greg Brannon, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate. Blinson told the board he considered it a private endorsement and not a public statement. He also says he should have been able to call witnesses to defend himself.
