A man from the Pinetown area of Beaufort County is dead after an early morning car crash.
The Highway Patrol says 32-year-old Matthew Miller of Pinetown was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Pungo Creek Rd. near Highway 264 in Beaufort County. The crash was reported at 2 a.m.
Sgt. Tim Crumpler says Miller was driving at least 85 miles per hour, but may have been driving over 100 miles per hour, when he lost control of the car, ran off the road to the right and hit a tree. That caused his car to flip.
Sgt. Crumpler says the wreck is still under investigation, but troopers believe speed and alcohol were the contributing factors in the wreck. A toxicology report will take four to six weeks, Crumpler said.
Sgt. Crumpler said the force of the impact knocked the engine out of Miller's 2005 Ford Mustang. No one else was in his car when he crashed.
