A new president has been named at Beaufort County Community College.
The BCCC Board of Trustees has named Dr. Barbara Tansey to the position.
She is the first woman to lead the school in its 45-year history.
Dr. Tansey is currently the vice president of Academic and Student Services at Fayetteville Technical Community College.
She will begin at BCCC on June 1.
Dr. Tansey will take over the helm from Dr. David McLawhorn, who is retiring after presiding over BCCC for almost 11 years.
“I am very confident in the decision the Board of Trustees has made in choosing the next president of the college,” said Mitchell St. Clair, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “I know we have the best candidate to move the college forward in an exciting new era."
“Dr. McLawhorn has been a great president and the passing of the baton is certainly bittersweet,” St. Clair said. “But the Board of Trustees is looking forward to working with Dr. Tansey in her new post.”
Tansey's experience includes leadership roles at South Piedmont Community College in Polkton, North Carolina, Pima Community College in Tuscon, Arizona and Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado.
She was also a teacher in rural Missouri and worked in the private sector as director of corporate training for an international construction company.
BCCC has more than 350 employees. The school serves 1,873 curriculum students and roughly 4,500 students through the Division of Continuing Education.
