Beaufort County Hospital Financial Trouble Could Affect Taxpayers

Financial woes at Beaufort county's hospital could mean less tax breaks for residents.

Beaufort County's Manager presented his recommendations to the board last week on what to do with Beaufort County Medical Center's debt problem, as it relates to the county's budget.

Paul Spruill says the hospital owes them 1.5 million dollars. If they can not repay the government, he suggests a three cent tax increase.

Although under his proposal the tax rate will still decrease in the coming year for tax payers.

Spruill says he proposed a tax rate of 52 cents down for 60 cents, currently.

Although, the tax rate could move up to 55 cents if the hospital can not repay their debt.

If my tax money goes to pay a debt that the hospital cannot pay; then I want the hospital to give free health care to the manual laborer that I occasionally hire.

clock is ticking, wonder if they are going to make that payment!

Why don't you pack your bags and move to Pitt Co. or out of state for that matter. If you are a MD I am sure you will have no problem finding employment. You have no clue whats going on in the world around you or at the local hospital .All I can say is sure glad you are not my physician. : )

I am sick of the same disgruntled former employee fired because she never showed up at work complaining about the hospital on these posts and pretending to be several people. Liars who say they are showing up for work and get busted when their mail piles up on the floor in front of their office for 2 weeks have no credibility. Dishonest! Anyone who believes the person posting below as "Area Physician" is either stupid, dumb or ignorant; No physician would refer to themselves publicly as the "privileged"! Get the real facts people; ask someone who knows!!!!! Ask the Admin, Board, Physician or numerous nurses (not just one) yourself!

Yes, the attitude of some of the clinicians are in the gutter at the hospital, especially some of the nurses. I hope they are the ones that were canned. How rude they are even to us who are privileged at the hospital. No wonder people will drive to Pitt just to skirt the attitudes at BCMC. And d, cold corporate entity? The cold corporate entity is much more inviting than the much worse attitudes at BCMC. I understand the negativity here. Instead of the community being expected to get behind the hosptial, how about the hospital getting behind the hospital. That would be where things should start.

"d" must be one of Bill's elite. The community did not make the hospital negative, poor managing skills did. I am sure in the end the community will get behind the hospital by having to bail it out by paying higher taxes.

You all forget that the hospital has lower infection rates. Hometown personality that lends to better care. If PCMH does buy or partner with teh facility I certainly hope it does not develop into the cold corporate entity that PCMH is- and that you acuse it of being. I have worked at Pitt - be carful what you ask for. As for the ORs suites it has generated new income from outside surgeons and will continue to do so. And I have seen Bills office. nothing special and certainly not as nice as John Lawlers office and about 50 others at PCMH. The community needs to get behind the hospital instead of the all negativity- and perhaps support the docs who stay in an underfunded county when they could go anywhere else for more money

Pirate girl, upper management wanted to benefit themselves. Just go look at those extememely nice offices in the new addition. You owe it to yourself, the whole county does so we can actually see for ourselves where the money went.

I can't believe that the taxpayers have to make up for the debt the hospital got themselves in. I knew when they started building that it was a bad idea and they wouldn't be able to afford it....and you wonder why the economy is in such turmoil because people don't know how to make WISE financial decisions that would benefit the city/county/state.....they just want to benefit themselves.....greed is what it's become

Don't raise my taxes!!!!! The hospital created their mess, sell it and move on. I never go there when I am sick or in an emergency. Pitt Memorial gets my money, I go where they have real doctors that practice medicine. The attitude at BCMC is in the gutter. The big wigs and doctors think they are somebody and are so clikish. They are rude, think they are God and that they are better than everyone else. They need to be knocked down a couple of notches. Find a buyer and clean house at BCMC!!!
