Fallen Power Lines Close Highway 17

Fallen power lines closed down Highway 17 south of Chocowinity on Thursday.

It happened around 11:45 a.m. near Frederick Road at the Highway 17 widening project.

Beaufort County Emergency Management Director John Pack says it appears a construction crew accidentally pulled down the lines across the highway.

State troopers set up detours for drivers until the lines were repaired.

People will complain no matter what anyone does to try and better an area. I think the bypass is great, takes alot of unneccessary traffic from downtown Chocowinity and Washington. With so many vehicles on the roads these days it has gotten so bad an over crowded especially on holiday and summer weekends. Kudos to the workers for finishing ahead also. To the whiners and moaners get over it.

I for one am glad about the bypass- if you lived on Highway 17 you would understand the importance of the road. It's very nice! If you, Clifton, do not like it, don't drive on it. I'm looking forward to the final completion of the project myself but at least it's getting there. And oh yea, don't forget it is ahead of schedule so it's nice of the DOT to go ahead and make the parts that are ready available for use. Not using it would be a waste of taxpayers money. So stop your belly-aching! :)

I can't understand WHY the towns and counties made such a big hulabaloo over the opening of this bypass, when in fact it STILL is not finished. That's all we heard and read for thirty days. We were all lead to believe that work WAS being finished for the "big grand opening". What waste of taxpayers money. All those out of towners that came in for nothing. All that press for nothing. The only thing that was finished was the bridge. Drama to the max.
