Eastern Counties Continue To See Growth

While the 2010 census is underway, data from 2009 shows many communities and counties in our state continue to grow, despite the economic downturn.

According the Census preliminary numbers, Pitt County has now jumped to the 15th largest county in the state. The statistics show there are 25,000 more people living in the county now than in 2000. County economic development officials attribute the population increase to job and educational opportunities like ECU and PCMH.

Another county in eastern Carolina that saw significant growth is Onslow County which is ranked 11th. Craven County is ranked 28th while Beaufort County is ranked 53rd in the state for population growth.
