Washington NC Student Headed To National Spelling Bee In DC

A student from P.S. Jones Middle School in Washington is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

Sixth grader Isabella Mayo beat out 42 other participants from all across Eastern Carolina Saturday at the 18th Annual Downeast NC Regional Spelling Bee at Washington High School.

Mayo won in the 11th round with the word "trajectory." Last year she finished third in the regional competition.

Maile McNaughton from First Flight Middle School placed second, and Amanda Keiper from SW Snowden Elementary came in third.

Mayo receives an all-expense paid trip for her and a chaperone to Washington D.C. to represent the region in the Scripps National Spelling Bee this spring.

WITN's Dave Jordan was the pronouncer for the spelling bee, which was sponsored by the Washington Daily News and PCS.

That is a great accomplishment Isabella!!! I have spent many grueling hours with my son to help him prepare for spelling Bee's & we have a few Awards that we're very proud of!!! He competed every year for about 4 years, I believe & at different schools as well, so don't let anything make you nervous....just jump up there again & show 'em what you got girlie!!!:) Best of Luck to you!!!

My daughter won for her school 2 years in a row and was looking forward to participating one last time but she never heard the class competition be announced. Waiting for it to be any day, the first we heard was what we saw in the newspaper. Someone represented Bath, but she didn't get an opportunity and she was a very worthy opponent.:(

We are so proud of you! Anyone with any experience in spelling bees knows how hard you've worked for this. Spelling bees involve so much more than any single word. Congratulations to all the kids who made it to regional. As for you, hope you have a great time in DC! We're pulling for you!
