Beaufort County Extends School Calendar To Make Up Snow Day

There's more bad news for kids making up snow days.

Beaufort County Schools has a new last day of school because of the winter weather. That will be June 10th.

The school system says March 30th was previously set aside as a make up day, but they decided to extend the calendar to June 10th to keep teacher workdays and holidays intact.

On Wednesday Pitt County Schools announced the latest snow day would be Memorial Day, May 31st.

A two hour delay would have been more than enough. I mean, the temperature remained above freezing the day following the snow, and the snow was mostly gone around lunch time. I thought the non-protected teacher's work days were supposed to be used for this purpose!!

Man! How many snow days did y'all get? We've only had about 5 or 6, and we're getting out at the end of May. June 10th!?! That's insane! When were school's supposed to get out?

The problem with the make up days on the calendar is that they have all passed except for the March 30th date which they've decided not to use. A majority of the students will not attend school on June 10th (my child included) so it's just a waste of money, gas, and free lunch. Like another poster wrote, after EOG/EOC's there is nothing being taught at school so children go to socialize or don't go at all but the school system has to have so many days in order to meet standards. But again, A Waste.

To "Loves Summertime", if your child is in private school and this did not affect you or your child why would it up set you when they make up the school day or what work days teachers get. I myself work in the school system and with all the paper work required besides lesson plans and deep cleaning the classrooms to keep the children healthy since "some parents " send their kids to school sick or well, the work days are actually needed they are not for the real teachers to have a coffee break all day. I think parents like you that feel teachers do not need workdays should sit in a classroom for one day and see what prep work goes into a days work, your child is worth every minute it takes to be prepared to teach them don't you think.

Why not let them make it up on a Saturday? You could get out at 11:30/12:00 and still count it as a whole day. Just wondering?!?!? Probably makes too much sense!

Enough people of Beaufort county schools! You could be like the students of Pitt County and have to spend your Memorial Day @ school instead of the beach!

You're part of the problem. Why do you feel you have to reward your kid by letting her skip the last 20 days? That's called truancy and is illegal. When your spoiled kid gets to high school, she won't be able to understand why she can't stay out 20 days and still pass her courses. You'll probably get heartburn from worrying about why your kid skips school so much and is constantly OSS. Guess what? You started it.

bcs teacher, an average teacher in the Beaufort Co. School system does not have 600 kids to get grades in for. your situation might be different but lets not over exagerate the situation.

@loves summertime: The teachers do not like to lose their summer either, but you should have to try to get grades in for over 600 kids without a teacher workday! As a resource teacher I am responsible for that, and with all my afterschool rehearsals it is impossible for me to find time to complete the paperwork, planning, and other tasks that it takes to be a wonderful teacher. I do not like adding a day, I do not like losing a teacher workday....there is no perfect solution. If your kids are in private school why do you care anyways?
