NEW INFO: Hood Richardson Seeking Basnight's Senate Seat

One of the most powerful elected officials in the state will have some competition this election cycle.

Beaufort County Commissioner Hood Richardson says he will run against 13-term State Senator Marc Basnight of Dare County. Richardson tells WITN News that he will formally declare his candidacy in Raleigh Wednesday.

The First Senatorial District is comprised of Beaufort, Camden, Currituck, Dare, Hyde, Pasquotank, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties.

Basnight is the President Pro Tempore of the North Carolina Senate. He
filed for re-election to a 13th term Tuesday morning. He said that creating jobs and building a sound educational system would be his continued focus if re-elected.

Basnight is a Democrat, and Richardson is a Republican.

Once we recognize Hood's personal agenda is strictly for power. He has been trying to get it for years but can't quite grasp it. We do not need a personality like his in the State House even though it would be wonderful for a more concientious commissioner to be on our board. Hood's finesse with local people during board meeetings is well known to be coming from another planet.

Basnights has just secured 28 million for the next 3yrs. then 15 million for the next 47 yrs. for a bridge that would shave 40 minutes off travel time & help vacationers get to obx quicker. Not a need but a want and not wanted by the locals. The Bonner bridge is falling into the water and he's writing obama asking for money for that project because of no funds. How can you consider reelecting a guy who is wastefully spending as he is. Pay the teachers, fix bridges already falling apart. Not contract with a company in Spain to take jobs from Americans to build a bridge not needed. I am sick and tired of wasteful gov't spending. Can we elect people who will look out for our interests and not their own. He is trying to turn obx into another VA beach. He's going to destroy what makes this place great. All for the money and greed of developers

Brownie doesn't own the paper anymore. Maybe you hadn't heard. As long as Hood is anti illegal, I am with him. As long as he is against our heathcare plan, I am with him. I respect a man that stands up for what he believes, I don't respect the many sheep that graze on the government dole. Basnight, is a herder as wall as Butterfield. John, great point. I am tired of paying for illegals, yep, schools, medical...they don't pay taxes, leaving us with the bill. Trust me, I am still paying for a woman having an anchor baby every month. 5K to have a mole removed at our local hospital. Of course, she skipped town and left the bill to be shared....

I can certainly see Brownie interest in this seat in Raleigh. It is very evident he wants to be like Ashley and follow in his achievement line.

Ive been in the policial arena a long time. Hood is just like some others in Washington, they think they are all that really matters. They have managed to get all the seats of commissioner live within afew miles of each other, atleast the ones that voice their opinons. Now Hood thinks Washington should have Williams, St Clair, and more in Raleigh. It is all becaise Brownie wants to go to Raleigh, so Claybourne keeps doing articles to give Hood free coverage. Everyone does not wear glasses. We can see clearly.

I think to state employees are good paying jobs with good benefits. actually all government/fed/state/local their benefits and salaries most often are more than most of the tax payers. Everytime you go to doc office or dentitst or drug store , they full of gov employees. Simply wearing their insurance cards, Im sure if they ahd to pay taxes and buy their own insurance policies there would not be so abuse. Blame yourself not politicans.

As usual, Basnight and his Socialist regime revert to name-calling and slanderous remarks. Those that work for a living and follow the Democrats' voting record know that the N. C. record unemployment rate is among the highest in the nation, the sales tax rate is higher in most counties and the personal and business tax rate is higher than surrounding states. Then Basnight and his Socialist buddies, including the governor, talk about creating jobs while raising taxes. They have the heel of their boot firmly on the throat of job growth in the private sector of this state. Hood Richardson is a small business owner, and an employer that meets a payroll. He is not a career politician that follows the lead of those taking the state over the cliff of economic disaster.

North Carolina is one of the fastest growning states so the budgets has to grow as well. NC is in much better situation than alot of areas. You need to spend more time traveling instead of staying home licking your wounds. Running back and forth to the republican Doctors and making our insurance go up sooo much. When Washington realized how pac money they get from insurance & doctors and had to pull back the troops.

Sen Basnight has been a leader in the NC Senate, and helped raise the state budget from $11 BILLION to $21 BILLION in the last 9 years. Way to go. How is that for fiscal responsibility. NC has also been a gateway for ILLEGAL immigration, with very lax laws and enforcement. He has been a Senator for 26 years and has led the way into the current mess our state is in. Our sales taxes have gone up, and so has the Income tax, so now NC is going to be PROGRESSIVE like the northern former industrial states that lost their manufacturing to us 30 years ago. They keep raising taxes, causing more business to leave. Hood has repeatedly fought to keep spending down, even if it was unpopular. He may not be the most charismatic person, but you can trust him to mean what he say and not give you lip service.
