DEPUTIES: Spitting Leads To Arrest In Beaufort County

An inmate is facing more charges after deputies say he spit on a detention officer's face and back.

Steven Jackson of Washington is charged with malicious conduct by a prisoner and assault on a government official.

On Tuesday, Beaufort County deputies say Detention Officer Richard Crandall was delivering linens to the cell blocks when the assault took place. The 23-year-old Jackson was being held in the jail awaiting transfer to the Department of Correction after a recent conviction.

Bond on the new charges was set at $6,000.

I had a guy spit in my face when I was serving a commitment order. Nasty, he had HIV also, and was a nut. He was in the back seat and spit through the case and hit me in the face. By the time I got out and walked around the car I had calmed down just a bit...if we had been face to face with no cage inbetween, I probably would have lost my job that day. Anyway, I charged him and this was before it became a felony so he got a misdemeanor charge.

i work mcon at maury correction.this really isnt't news,it happens everyday.the real news is when will we get help from our gorverment.spit IS nasty but it gets worst esecially when you get a big cup of warm do-do in the face.for the people that dont work in the prison system you will never believe what goes on in there or even care, but i leave you with this thought...please be glad that we are there to do this job by keeping these people in there, cause if not, these are the people that would be breaking in your house, raping your children and killing your parents.we deserve respect and deserve it often.

Well, to Mr. Truth at 6:40 PM, its not your job to work around people that want to spit on you on day long. That's probably why you don't have those same protections. I have suggestion, next time the wind is blowing in your face, launch one in the air so you can get the same experience as working in a jail.

If someone threw bodily fluids on me, I probably would want to know if they had any diseases.
