Community College Hacker May Have Compromised Sensitive Information

Tens of thousands of people in our state are being told to check their credit status, after a hacker may have stolen sensitive information from a server of the community college system.

Officials say there is no evidence so far that the hacker actually accessed personal information, but that the servers hacked into contained social security numbers and drivers license numbers from some community college libraries.

The community colleges in the East whose library user information included driver's license numbers are Beaufort, Halifax, Martin, Pamlico, and Wilson.

The community colleges that had social security numbers of patrons on its library server are Lenoir, Nash, Pamlico, Roanoke-Chowan, and Wilson.

Officials said the libraries collected the sensitive data to help identify its users, but they've started removing that now. It's not clear why the state waited until now to announce a breach that happened and was discovered in August.
