DOT Bridge Engineer Admits To Kickbacks

A former district bridge engineer for the D.O.T. has admitted he extorted thousands of dollars in return for giving an excavation company state contracts.

D.R. Alligood, who was district bridge engineer for Beaufort & Pitt counties made a plea Monday in Raleigh federal court.

The bridge maintenance engineer admitted he got a 10% kickback from the company, paid in cash. The U.S. Attorney's Office says the kickbacks began in mid-2004 and lasted until 2006.

In all, Alligood admitted to taking some $30,000 in kickbacks. The feds say the kickback scheme ended when other D.O.T. officials were charged with similar crimes.

The D.O.T. says Alligood started with them in March 1989 and was dismissed May 30, 2007.

He faces a maximum 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
