Ayden Man Finds $20,000 Dollars On NC Unclaimed Property List

Imagine having a ton of money sitting in a bank that belongs to you and you have no idea it's there.

It was no dream for one person here in Eastern Carolina.
You might want to ask yourself when is the last time you checked the North Carolina Unclaimed Property List.

It turns out there are one million properties in their database and with eight million North Carolinians you have a 1 in 8 chance of finding your name.

That was the story of Bernard Rogers. He's been taking care of the grounds for Pitt County Schools for about 13 years.

He's a guy that doesn't like to move much. Rogers has been at his home in Ayden since 1979.

Rogers filed a claim against his former insurance company Aflac some years back. He said when he got no response he thought his claim didn't go through. But that wasn't exactly the case.

The town of Ayden completed the E911 system in 2000.

Some addresses had to be changed so every emergency response unit in Pitt County were all working with the same address's.

After the system was completed, Rogers address changed from 1809 Johnson Circle to 4508 Johnson Circle. Town officials say residents had one year to get all their mail forwarded. It's not clear when Rogers forwarded his mail.

WITN surprised Rogers at work and told him his name was on the Unclaimed Property List and he was owed at least $5,000. Rogers response, "five-thousand dollars. I could sure use it."

It turns out Rogers is not alone. In the old vault at the Treasure's office we found things like jewelry, rings, coin collections, silverware, a three and dollar bill among others. There is over 600 million dollars on the NC Unclaimed Property List waiting to be returned.

State Treasurer Janet Cowell says, " in the unclaimed lock box we find love letters, gold coins, teeth you name it."

We joined him about two weeks later when the check arrived in the mail. Rogers had received a check for over twenty-thousand dollars.

The North Carolina State treasurer gives out nearly $2.5 million dollars per month to the rightful owners.

The interest earned on the funds goes to the state educational assistance authority in the form of grants, loans and scholarships to North Carolina college students attending public universities and community colleges.

In 2008, the Unclaimed Property program assisted over 70 thousand students.

Below is a list of the amount of unclaimed property money in each county:

WITN: thanks for the info. went to site and found it interesting. Found money that belong to my boss, he'll take me out for lunch when he gets his check. Lots of people in greenville are on the list, many names I know and I contacted them. Curious, why is the clerk of court on the list?

The poll BRICK will drop fast for Obama when it happens. It will be like someone dropped a brick of a building. Obama's poll results when news gets out about him and Wall Street. How he lost everyone's investments & IRA's. You can not retire now, and he is going to take more money from the people in taxes he has to pay for all his spending.. One thing must almost be certain. When anything like that starts to happen, it's going to happen fast. Ever notice that most of the main media companies tend to move in unison? So if they eventually cover news about Obama that is bad for his polls, it's going to be in unison. And sort of like the iron curtain coming down. He may not get BAD numbers yet. But odds are there will be a fairly huge drop in a matter of weeks - maybe a month. What would you say - 15 point plunge at least. Will Obama be Impeached? He forgot we the people run this country. Not the Obama's
